Malick Sidibé

So ziemlich jeder auf der Szene kennt dieses Foto, das immer wieder Flyer von Ska-Veranstaltungen ziert, aber die wenigsten wissen, dass die Aufnahme nicht aus dem Jamaika der 60er stammt, sondern aus Mali. In einem Interview mit indexmagazine erzählt Fotograf Malick Sidibé, was auf diesem Foto zu sehen ist:

Because the young people couldn’t get close together in front of the older people, they created their own clubs outside their small towns … where the older people wouldn’t see them. By ’70 or ’71, the older people would come and they would sit around the younger people who would be dancing. So everybody in the place would profit from the joy of the party.

Randy’s Records Recording Studio

At 17 North Parade in Kingston, climb the dark stairs from the bustling market below and enter into the former record store and recording studio of Randy’s Records, founded by the late Vincent Chin.
This studio was witness to some of the the most crucial reggae recordings of the 1970s.

Jamaica’s Golden Age of Music, Captured on Film

Fotograf Dave Hendley, der in den 70ern mit seiner Kamera auf Jamaika unterwegs war, zeigt seine Fotos und erzählt, wie sie zustande kamen. Am Rande natürlich auch mal wieder eine kurze Erwähnung von Skinheads:

(…) Reggae was the soundtrack to that, because the skinheads were choosing the music that would be the antithesis of that complex, progressive rock at the time, that kind of over–intellectualized, over-complicated music. What could be more fundamental than reggae? Its beauty is in the space, really, its minimalism, and what’s not there.(…)
