As the Jamaica Observer reports, there is a documentary about Joe “Drummie” Isaacs and Studio 1 Rock Steady in the making. Not bad, eh?
In it, Isaacs, who played on many classic songs at Studio One during the 1960s, speaks of his days working with legendary musicians including Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer, Jackie Mittoo, Alton Ellis, Ken Boothe, Toots and the Maytals, the Heptones, Marcia Griffiths [and] Burning Spear.
Rock Steady and Reggae legend Barry Llewellyn has turned away for good. As a founding member of the Heptones he was part of one of the finest vocal groups of all times and will be remembered as one of Reggae’s biggest heroes. What a gift to have seen Barry and the Heptones live on stage a couple of years ago. Praises to the man.

Very nice interview with Leroy Sibbles at United Reggae. The Studio 1 tales are particularly interesting:
“Coxsone was the one with control and he put it out there. Put it on the market. We had no saying and when we worked he wasn’t there. He would come in at night and review what we had done.”

“The Legendary Studio One Records: Original Classic Recordings 1963-80” nennt sich die erste Soul Jazz Compilation seit einigen Jahren, die sich dem Œuvre Dodds widmet. Der Grund für die lange Pause dürfte mit den rechtlichen Auseinandersetzungen um Seymour Dodds Erbe zusammenhängen, über die wir hier im Blog immer wieder berichtet haben. Wie auch immer, in den Startlöchern steckt eine bezaubernde Doppel-LP, die etwas kopflos zusammengestellt wirkt (wäre die Tracklist ein DJ-Set, wäre der Selector die längste Zeit Selector gewesen), aber allerbesten Studio 1 Sound durch die Boxen drückt. “Give me the right” von den Heptones heißt auf der Zusammenstellung auf einmal “I’m your man”, soll mir aber auch recht sein. Oder ist das ein anderer Mix? Wie auch immer: Murderah! Via.

The Jamaica Gleaner about many veteran artistes’ problem: their more recent productions are disregarded and aren’t played, because everybody wants to listen to their old stuff.
Artistes from the rocksteady and roots-reggae eras, including Bob Andy, Leroy Sibbles, John Holt and Ernie Smith, have complained that their new music is ignored by local disc jockeys who prefer to play their standards from the 1960s and 1970s.

Reggae Vibes hat das wohl umfassendste Archiv mit Interviews mit jamaikanischen Künstlern. Die Interviews wurden alle von Profis wie dem 2006 gestorbenen Roots Knotty Roots Entwickler Bob Schoenfeld, Peter I. und Roger Steffens durchgeführt. Unter den vielen interviewten Künstlern finden sich sowohl seit Jahrzehnten im Rampenlicht stehende Künstler wie Derrick Morgan als auch unterbewertete Künstler wie Trevor Shields, der mit den Beltones einige fantastische Nummern für Harry J eingespielt hat. Sehr empfehlenswerte Interviews sind unter anderem die mit Keith Rowe, Lynn Taitt, Leroy Sibbles und Trevor Shields.
Außerdem bietet Reggae Vibes noch von Reggaeinstitutionen wie Steve Barrow (“The rough guide to Reggae” mit Peter Dalton, “Jammy’s” mit Beth Lesser) verfasste Künstlerporträts. Blöd nur, dass die Homophobie zahlreicher porträtierter Künstler nicht mal erwähnt wird.
In Bersenbrück gibt es dieses Jahr vom 5.8. bis zum 7.8. beim Reggae Jam ein unglaubliches Line Up zu bestaunen: Ken Boothe, die Heptones und Marcia Griffiths sind beispielsweise schon bestätigt. Sehr schön auch, dass man sich klar gegen jede Form von Diskriminierung ausspricht. Ein Dubplatestudio gibt es auch, und das zu nutzen ist bei dem Line Up ja durchaus eine Überlegung wert.
