Those were the days: Skinheads in the 80s

Over the tea Mark says he has no time for mods (‘just a load of wimps’), Teds, rockabillies or Asians. Why Asians? ‘I don’t like Pakis and I don’t know any skinheads who do. Pakis just don’t mix. You’ll see one of them,’ he points to the Peter Tosh poster, ‘with a white man. Never see a Paki with one. Paki-bashing is all part of the cult anyway.’

Ian Walker about the brutal absurdity of the 1980s Skinhead cult. Worth reading (not that you will like what you read, though).

‘The birds of the reds are worst,’ says Rita Hope.

Two Big Sound: Sir Coxsone and Saxon Sound

Great documentary about Saxon Studio Sound and the legendary Sir Coxsone.

This film is a ruff cut history lesson with a difference, it is by no means the bible of the UK sound system, It doesn’t cover every facet of the sound system UK history, nor does it follow a timeline or chronology. What Two Big Sound does do, is uncover subjects rarely heard about in Black UK music history.

Featuring Smiley Culture (1, 2), Chris Peckings, Daddy Colonel, and many more.

The short hot riot summer of 81: Southall, Brixton, Wood Green, & more

History is made at night has written a fascinating series of stories about the summer riots of 1981 in the UK. The posts feature political and cultural aspects and Reggae is featured, too. One post covers the infamous Southall riots around a concert by The 4-Skins, The Last Resort and The Business. Definetly worth the read, as are all of the blog’s posts. Copyright of the picture of the running Skinhead on the right hand side belongs to David Hoffman, seemingly a dedicated chronicler of riots.

Ska Woche in der Chris Hawkins Show (BBC 6)

Chris Hawkins starts your day with a mix of the best new music, forgotten classics and session tracks from the BBC archive seven days a week.
