Rumour has it that even though they’re not yet released, there are only a few copies left of the limited edition LP of the Phoneix City All Stars‘.
The album „Skatisfaction“ features members from Pama International, The Specials, Intensified, The Sidewalk Doctors, Kasabian, Dub Vendor All-stars, The Delegators and more playing Rolling Stones tunes in a great Ska style.
Völlig unfassbarerweise werden demnächst Mitglieder der Soul Vendors und der Sound Dimension, darunter Joe Isaacs (!), Brian Atkinson (!), Hux Brown (!), Vin Gordon (!), Carl Bryan (!), David Madden (!) und Robbie Lyn (!), ein gemeinsames Sound Dimension Konzert geben. Dazu kommen noch Special Guests. Faszinierend, was reggaetechnisch in Los Angeles geht. Via.
It was made up of nine, now very famous, national cultural icons, including McCook as leader, along with the incomparable Don Drummond, that brilliant keyboardist and arranger Jackie Mittoo, ‚Dizzy‘ Johnny Moore, ‚Jah Jerry‘ Haynes, Roland Alphonso, Lloyd Knibb, Lloyd Brevett, Lester Sterling and lead singer Doreen Schaeffer. Over a period of approximately 18 months, they backed the live appearances of many artistes promoted by ‚Coxson‘ and other promoters. Four years after the group split up in 1965, Don Drummond met his untimely death. Between then and 1983, the other members performed mainly in two succeeding groups; the Soul Vendors and the SuperSonics. In 1983, at the urging of Synergy Productions and the prospect of the Skatalites performing live at Reggae Sunsplash that year, the group reunited.
SAXOPHONIST Lester Sterling, the lone surviving original member of the Skatalites and Doreen Schaeffer, long-time vocalist with the pioneer band, have added their voices to the list of persons paying tribute to bass player Lloyd Brevett. Brevett, the band’s original bass player, died last Thursday in Kingston at age 80.
As the Jamaica Observer reports, Okeene Brevett, the son of Skatalites founding member Lloyd Brevett, was shot yesterday only hours after he collected an JaRIA award in behalf of his legendary father. The picture shows him with former PM Patterson who held the presentation. Another sad and senseless death.
Totally amazing documentary. A real must see! When it comes to vintage footage this is easily the single best documentary about Jamaican music I have ever seen. Definetly worth buying (here, e.g.) and I have no idea why it’s not more famous.
“People have always come together to move to music. In the process communities have been created, social divisions challenged, pleasure exalted over work and a billion relationships have blossomed. At the same time dancing bodies have often been subject to regulation – rules about when, where and how they can move, rules about who is allowed to dance with who, rules about what dancers can wear and put inside their bodies… That, in essence, is the ‘politics of dancing’.” source: History is made at Night
